My latest sprouting adventure is garbanzo beans. I sprouted them thinking that I would try out the sprout hummus recipe found at my favorite sprout website, sprout people. Well, the first batch didn't make it that far. The Sprout People website recommends tasting your sprouts at each rinse, and so I did. I discovered that I like to eat sprouted garbanzos without even doing anything to them. Just eat them like I would popcorn. They are the closest thing I have found to fresh peas without being fresh peas. For those of you who love fresh peas, you may taste sprouted garbanzo beans and think I'm crazy. I'll tell you though, if I can't have fresh peas, these are a pretty good alternative.
For my second batch I sprouted a bit more than the first batch, so I could eat some and make some into hummus. It turned out a little bit grainier than the hummus you get at the store, but if that is something that you don't like you could blend them a little bit longer and add a bit more liquid.
We have a girl at my preschool who brings an individual hummus container almost every day in her lunch. I have been watching for them at the store, but no luck so far. So I decided to make my own, and since I had the beans for sprouting, I figured this would be a good time to try them out. I adapted the recipe, because I didn't have any tahini or sesame oil, but I thought it turned out great! Now I have to wait for my new order of garbanzo beans to arrive, so I can make some more. Maybe for my next adventure I will try out the Hot and Spicy sprouting mix. Could be fun!
